Rossini / Prokofiev / Rimsky-Korsakov

La Cenerentola, the comic opera by Gioachino Rossini, premiered in Rome in January 1817. Unlike Charles Perrault's well-known French fairy tale, the composer built it as a realistic yet exceptionally witty and brisk story of mistaken identity, in which true goodness of heart triumphs over evil. Sergei Prokofiev wrote his popular Piano Concerto No. 3 in 1921 during a summer holiday in Brittany, France. The work premiered in Chicago in December 1921, with the composer himself as soloist. The four-movement Sheherazade of 1888 by the Russian Romantic Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is among the most famous and most captivating symphonic poems in classical music. The composer drew his inspiration from the Arabic tales of One Thousand and One Nights.
