78th Season Opening Concert

For technical reasons, the sound of Orawa required separate post-production and may therefore differ slightly from the rest of the concert.

The opening concert of the Slovak Philharmonic's 78th season, conducted by the orchestra's principal guest conductor, presents Orawa, one of the best-known and most frequently performed works by the renowned Polish composer Wojciech Kilar (1932 – 2013), a member of the legendary school of composers from our northern neighbour that astonished Europe with its compositional innovation in the 1960s. Written in 1986 for string ensemble and inspired by Gorale folk music (Kilar came from Katowice in Silesia), the piece begins with a quiet motif in the solo violins and ends with an energetic dance of the whole orchestra, culminating in the players' shout “Hey!”. Meditation for solo violin, 48 string instruments and timpani by this year's composer-jubilarian Vladimír Godár was written in 1984; its basic musical message is a contemplation on Beethoven's famous question Muss es sein?. Leoš Janáček's Violin Concerto The Wandering of a Little Soul was prompted by the composer's visit to London in 1926, where he was enchanted by the playing of violinist Adila Fachiri. For a long time experts regarded the manuscript as a sketch; only in 1988 was it found to be a complete score. Goethe's Faust and Dante's Divine Comedy fascinated Franz Liszt from his youth. He set to systematic work on the Dante Symphony only after moving to Weimar, by which time he had completed most of his symphonic poems and the first version of the Faust Symphony.

The concert is presented in cooperation with the Franz Liszt festival3cities.
