Slovak music in one place: a new page on Slovak composers
How much Slovak music is there in the Slovak Philharmonic’s archive? We have gathered the answer on a single page: 127 composers from the Baroque to the present, nearly five hundred works, 91 premieres and more than five hundred pieces you can play straight from their beginning.
The Slovak Philharmonic's archive grows concert by concert, and finding a single composer in it is easy – through the search or the lists. A simple question, however, was hard to answer until now: how much Slovak music is actually here?
The answer is a new page, Slovak Composers in the Concert Archive of the Slovak Philharmonic. It brings together everything the archive knows about Slovak music – and it updates itself with every concert we add.
What you will find there
As of today it covers 127 composers, 496 works and 651 performances since 1948, seen from several angles:
- By generation – from the Baroque and Classical eras through Romanticism and the national revival, the founders of Slovak modernism, the post-war generation and the Slovak avant-garde, to the present generation born after 1970. The earliest name is Zachariáš Zarevúcky (1605–1667).
- Most performed composers – led by Eugen Suchoň with 50 performances, followed by Alexander Moyzes (44), Ján Cikker (36) and Vladimír Godár (33). Ľubica Čekovská is in the top ten too.
- Most performed works – Moyzes's Tance z Pohronia (Dances from the Hron Region, 13×) and Cikker's Memories (12×) return most often.
- Premieres – 91 world and Slovak premieres of Slovak works. The latest is the world premiere of Godár's Passacaglia dolorosa at the concert marking his 70th birthday in September 2026.
- To watch – 538 Slovak pieces with a recording. The link starts the video right at the beginning of the piece, so there is no need to search through the whole concert.
- On CD – 18 discs of Slovak music.
- Slovak encores – works the performers chose themselves as encores, from Zarevúcky's Meine Seele erhebt den Herren (June 2026) to Jarolím Emmanuel Ružička's Improvisation on the theme by Elvis Presley “Angel”.
You can also look up a specific name directly – the page has its own search.
Who is included
What counts is the archive: the page lists composers active in the territory of present-day Slovakia whose music has been performed at Slovak Philharmonic concerts. It is therefore not a complete register of Slovak music, but Slovak music as the Slovak Philharmonic has played and plays it. If you cannot find someone, their music is not in the archive yet – or we are just adding it.
Faces to the names
Most names come with a portrait. A large share of them was provided by the Music Centre Slovakia – thank you. It is a fine example of how two institutions caring for Slovak music can complement each other. A few portraits are still missing; we are adding them gradually.
You will also find the page among the Lists in the “A Closer Look” group. Play something you have not heard before – there is more Slovak music in the archive than you might expect.
