Dušan Katuščák

Dušan Katuščák (born 4 February 1946 in Bratislava) is a Slovak librarian, information scientist and university teacher.

From 1968 to 2000 he worked in the bibliographic departments of Matica slovenská. At the Slovak National Library in Martin he was deputy director from 1983 to 1987 and its director general from 2000 to 2012; he initiated OPIS2, the national cultural heritage digitisation project.

He taught in parallel: from 1992 to 2000 at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava, where he headed the Department of Library and Information Science, and from 2002 to 2017 at the University of Žilina, where he founded the study programme in mediamatics and cultural heritage and served as vice-dean of the Faculty of Humanities from 2012 to 2017. He was appointed professor in 2010.

He co-authored Knižničná a informačná veda na prahu informačnej spoločnosti (2000) and Akademická príručka (2004) and has written more than 230 scholarly papers. He received the Matej Bel Prize of the Slovak Literary Fund for his translation of the UNIMARC format.

In 2013 he digitised the programme archive of the Slovak Philharmonic — the daily programme bulletins of 1949–1972 — and made it available to this archive; we refer to it as the Katuščák box, abbreviated KK. The scans carry a text layer and can be searched, and for concerts of those years they are often the only surviving record of the programme and the performers. The archive also cites its sources according to the STN ISO 690 methodology that he formulated in Slovakia, among others in Akademická príručka.
