Anton Viskup

Anton Viskup (born 25 April 1953 in Bratislava – died September 2026) was a Slovak double bass player, composer, teacher, archivist, librarian and long-serving chief dramaturge of the Slovak Philharmonic.

He studied the double bass at the Bratislava Conservatory (1968–1974, under Karol Illek) and at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava (1974–1978), counterpoint and music writing privately with Juraj Pospíšil (1979–1980), and composition at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno (1980–1985, under Alois Piňos).

He played in the double bass section of the Slovak Philharmonic from 1972, while still a conservatory student, until 1995. From 1983 he taught double bass and chamber music at the Bratislava Conservatory. From 1995, with a short break, until 2013 he was the Slovak Philharmonic's chief dramaturge, adviser and deputy director for artistic operations. He continued to work with the Philharmonic afterwards and documented its artistic activity until his last days. He compiled the jubilee publication Musica aeterna 1973–2003, part of the book Slovenská filharmónia 1949–2019 and a documentary text for the 80th anniversary of the Slovak Philharmonic Choir.

He compiled a chronological inventory of Slovak Philharmonic concerts – Koncertné sezóny SF 01–77, 2,405 pages and 13,453 entries from the first concert in 1947 up to the 77th concert season 2025/2026. For each concert it records the date, subscription series, venue, ensemble, conductor, soloists and the programme with opus numbers. For this archive it is the fundamental source for the history of the Slovak Philharmonic, and for concerts whose programme bulletin has not survived it is often the only one.
