Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn, composers of the same era, spent most of their lives in the musically rich Austrian cultural milieu. During the Classical period, music flourished at aristocratic courts and was an integral part of celebrations and social gatherings. Both works on the program contain a witty punchline through which Mozart and Haydn respond to the situation of their time. The Musical Joke, KV 522, parodies the incompetent composers of the era and their mechanical musical structures and short phrases. The Symphony in F-sharp minor, “Farewell,” Hob. I:45, is a reaction to the conditions faced by the musicians in Count Esterházy's court orchestra. Instead of a monumental symphonic finale, the number of players gradually dwindles, and the final notes are played out by only a solitary violin duo.
