Joseph Haydn is a key figure in music history. He had his preferred genres, in which he created “miracles.” Although the piano sonata was not among them, Haydn nevertheless conjured up a great many inspiring works in this genre as well. Juraj Hatrík sought in each of his works intersections between music and a kind of mythical “timelessness”; the principle of the ciaccona therefore suited him well. Franz Schubert wrote his three masterful piano sonatas on the threshold of his untimely death. They are exceptionally complex compositions, not only in terms of technical maturity but especially in terms of expression.
