Debussy / Franck / Fauré / Poulenc
Claude Debussy, after his reform at the end of his life, decided to honour the tradition and wrote several charming works in the spirit of the sonata. César Franck's best-played works are the Symphony in D minor and the Viola Sonata in A major - the latter also exists in an arrangement for cello. Gabriel Fauré is still an under-appreciated composer in this country, and it was he who was at the origin of Claude Debussy's revolutionary deeds. Francis Poulenc was a versatile musician; he was skilled in street “chanteuse”, classical formations and, finally, liturgical music.
