Composers: Johannes Brahms (1833–1897), Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904)

Chamber Concert

Antonín Dvořák at the peak of his career was triumphant in London and New York. During his tenure as director of the New York Conservatory, he was attentive to local music and incorporated its elements into his own compositions. He dedicated a Sonatina for violin and piano to “my children” – his pupils. The Sonata for Violin and Piano in F major is Dvořák's only opus labelled as a “sonata”. He wrote it simultaneously with the famous Violin Concerto in A minor, so that it seems to be a poetic, intimate “laboratory” for a serious concertante work. Dvořák's career was launched brilliantly by Johannes Brahms when he recommended the Czech composer to the publisher Simrock. In all, Brahms dedicated three original and impressive sonatas to violin and piano. The third of these already dates from a period of creative reckoning. It is composed as a four-movement – i.e. symphonic – cycle.

The works of two compositional greats will be performed at the BHS by two exceptional artists Ivan Ženatý and Marian Lapšanský, who are among the top performers, but whose activities have also significantly influenced the level of music education and artistic life not only in the Central European region.
