Za čias pôsobenia Jana Václava Stamica v Mannheime získal tunajší orchester európsku povesť. Vo svojich symfóniách dokázal spojiť štýlové prvky talianskej, viedenskej, nemeckej a staršej českej hudby a položiť základy hudobnému klasicizmu. Diela Milana Nováka sa vyznačujú spontánnou muzikalitou, temperamentom a zmyslom pre klenuté melodické línie. Spoločným menovateľom Smútočnej hudby Paula Hindemitha a skladby Planctus Ladislava Burlasa, ktorá vznikla ako reakcia na inváziu spojeneckých vojsk v roku 1968, je lamentózny charakter. Ottorino Respighi, popredný reprezentant talianskeho symfonizmu prvej polovice 20. storočia, vo svojich neoklasických suitách Antické árie a tance čerpá z materiálu lutnových a gitarových tabulatúr 16. a 17. storočia.
