Baroková éra znamenala pre hudobníkov dva prístupy k tvorbe a k interpretácii. Na jednej strane boli prísne viazaní stratégiou basso continuo, na strane druhej boli doslova nútení vypĺňať prísne harmonické štruktúry improvizáciou v oblasti ornamentiky, sonoristiky a melodiky. Talianski skladatelia v tomto smere na európskom hudobnom „trhu“ tých čias dominovali.
