Ludwig van Beethoven je často vnímaný ako veľmi expresívny, pasionátny autor. Vo svojej hudbe nahradil po vzore Carla Philippa Emanuela Bacha systematickú, tabuľkovú barokovú afektivitu pravou emóciou. Sonáta f mol je v tomto smere symbolom. Johannes Brahms ponúka takisto silne emočnú hudbu, v jeho prípade je však táto rovina držaná v asketickej intimite. Béla Bartók výrazovosťou v zásade takisto nešetril, vedel však byť aj nežný, pastorálny, bukolický.
