Immortal love, one of the eternal themes. The mythology of love and death. Mortality, Infinity… eternal stimuli for artistic creation. The story of the Verona lovers was first in the history of music to be treated in a grandiose way by Hector Berlioz. In his case, however, the inspiration is distinctly autobiographical. The misanthropic Berlioz experienced an “endless” and ultimately unfulfilled love for the Irish actress Harriet Smithson. The infernal scenario of the Symphonie Fantastique is also a vision of their relationship. For Berlioz, then, the young people's tragic romance was a personal affair. He treated it in a truly unique way, partly following the model of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, partly according to his own ideas.
