Tetralógia Richarda Wagnera o prsteni Niebelungov je v rámci hudobnodramatickej tvorby raritou. Nemeckému reformátorovi sa splnil jeho tvorivý sen. Veľmi významné sú v tomto kolose symfonické intermezzá a scény. Richard Wagner zreformoval hudobné divadlo, Ludwig van Beethoven reformoval pevnou rukou symfonickú, komornú a koncertantnú tradíciu. V oblasti klavírneho koncertu sa síce mohol oprieť o ekvivalentné vrcholné diela Wolfganga Amadea Mozarta, predsa však 4. a 5. klavírny koncert už prichádzajú z budúcnosti. Dedičom beethovenovských reforiem bol aj Belgičan César Franck. Venoval sa síce najmä organovej hudbe a symfonickým básňam v štýle Franza Liszta, v Symfónii d mol prerážajú na povrch beethovenovské črty.
