Composers: Béla Bartók (1881–1945), Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953), Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943)

Inšpiráciou Sergeja Rachmaninova v prípade symfonického obrazu Ostrov mŕtvych je rovnomenné temné plátno Arnolda Böcklina. Ruský skladateľ majstrovsky vystihol ťaživú atmosféru expresívnej maľby. Deväť zakliatych jeleňov – tak znie podtitul sugestívnej kompozície Bélu Bartóka na texty starej rumunskej colindy, obdoby našej baladickej koledy. Na londýnskej premiére bolo dielo prijaté s nadšením. Capriccio na cigánske témy je mladíckym opusom Sergeja Rachmaninova. Skladba naznačuje zvýšený záujem autorov prelomu 19. a 20. storočia o exotické hudobné inšpirácie. Explozívna Skýtska suita Sergeja Prokofieva, motivovaná pohanskou nekompromisnosťou výrazu je jedným z radostných škandálov prevej tretiny 20. storočia.
