Žáner koncertu pre orchester je síce formálne výdobytkom hudby 20. storočia, aj v dávnejších časoch písali skladatelia diela, ktoré výrazne otestujú každého hráča v symfonickom telese. Peter Kolman, jeden z reprezentantov „slovenskej hudobnej emigrácie“ šesťdesiatych rokov 20. storočia orchester a jeho možnosti dokonale ovláda. Bratislavský rodák Franz Schmidt je jednou z tých osobností, ktoré na prelome 19. a 20. storočia dotvárali blazeovanú atmosféru fin de siécle. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy bol jedným zo zázračných detí; komponoval už ako deväťročný a svoju prvú veľkú symfóniu ponúkol vo veku pätnástich rokov.
