Composers: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827), Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943)

Štyri tiché údery na tympany otvárajú impozantný príbeh Husľového koncertu Ludwiga van Beethovena. Zlé jazyky hovoria, že tento koncert je skôr mutáciou klavírneho koncertu pre husle. V každom prípade však Beethoven inicioval množstvo nasledujúcich „symfónií s husľami“ – za všetky uveďme Brahmsov koncert v rovnakej tónine. Zatiaľ čo Beethovenov Husľový koncert otvára novú historickú kapitolu, Symfonické tance Sergeja Rachmaninova sú autorovou labuťou piesňou. Pôvodne koncipoval Rachmaninov svoju rozlúčku ako triptych o hre svetla, šera a noci, napokon však uprednostnil významovo neutrálny názov. Citácia sekvencie Dies irae v poslednom tanci je jednoznačným gestom a Rachmaninovovým definitívnym adieux.
