Smetana Litomysl

The Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by its chief conductor Petr Popelka–who also holds the same position with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra–and the Slovak Philharmonic Choir will present an evening full of contrasts: the tender and melancholic lyricism of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and the dramatic power of Stravinsky's work.

The rarely performed opera-oratorio Oedipus Rex is based on Sophocles' story of the fate of King Oedipus and his inevitable downfall. The work's monumental form and Latin text create a dramatic and timeless musical world that draws listeners into the story and its emotions. In it, Stravinsky poses the question of whether a person can escape fate–and reminds us that the order of the world, just like the order of nature, is inexorable. The title role will be performed by the renowned tenor Paul Appleby. He will be joined by leading Czech singers, headlined by Ester Pavlů and Jiří Brückler. Together with Petr Popelka, they promise a powerful artistic experience.
