Composers: Alberto Ginastera (1916–1983), Friedrich Gulda (1930–2000), Francis Poulenc (1899–1963)

Balet bol pre účastníkov zápolení o novú hudobnú poetiku 20. storočia obrovskou výzvou. Nánosy amorfných štruktúr hudby konca 19. storočia odblokovali disciplínu rytmu a metra, závislosť na možnostiach ľudského tela. Balety vznikali sťa by na bežiacom páse. V prípade diela Alberta Ginasteru pribúda ešte pridaná hodnota v podobe sviežeho etnického podtónu. Friedrich Gulda síce balety nepísal, ale jeho klavírna hra a aj jeho príležitostné kompozície vnášajú do hudby 20. storočia občas „chuligánske“ prvky. Francis Poulenc mal napriek traumám z bipolárnej poruchy osobnosti takisto zmysel pre hravý humor; príkladom je aj balet Lane, v ktorom delikátne kritizuje nebezpečnú duchovnú biedu človeka.
