The composer Juraj Družecký, or rather Jiří Družecký, was originally from Bohemia; he served in the army as a drummer and trumpeter, then traveled through Slovakia before eventually dying in Budapest. His stay in Bratislava was the most significant phase in the development of his compositional style. He responded readily to revolutionary advances in instrument-making—specifically, the emergence of the basset horn, the predecessor of the clarinet. Hugolín Gavlovič was ordained as a priest, but lung problems prevented him from actively preaching. His “opus magnum,”Valaská škola, mravúv stodola (The Shepherd's School, the Barn of Morals), is a collection of gentle “sermons,” delivered with wisdom and in a pastoral spirit.
