Gustav Mahler and his symphonic works embody the spiritual crisis of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Mahler's symphonies are fascinating for their scale, orchestration, and turbulent shifts in expression. Yet they are also, in a certain sense, a dark memento influencing the reality of that time.
