Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 9

Gustav Mahler and his symphonic works embody the spiritual crisis of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Mahler's symphonies are fascinating for their scale, orchestration, and turbulent shifts in expression. Yet they are also, in a certain sense, a dark memento influencing the reality of that time. The general crisis intertwines in Mahler's music with his personal psychological traumas. The result is works that dazzle with their sound and expressive gestures while simultaneously evoking a sense of psychological unease. After a series of eight colossal works, the Ninth Symphony concludes this wondrous and astonishing story with a “divine” *Adagio*—one of the most impressive musical prayers.
