At the age of eleven, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy also tried his hand at composition with the Violin Concerto in D minor. The work was forgotten after his death and was not performed until 1952. Béla Bartók took a keen interest in ethnic inspirations. The form of the rhapsody expressed these ambitions quite clearly. Gustav Holst dedicated his lively Suite in C to St. Paul's Girls' School in Hammersmith. “Bloch's Concerto was generally the best written and most effective of all the new works, although it lacks some of the power and color…”. The Swiss composer, living in the U.S., thus attracted attention with his “neo-Baroque” title.
