Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was drawn to mythical, fairy-tale themes – the overture The Fair Melusine is one of them. Anatoly Lyadov's impressive symphonic picture The Enchanted Lake, full of impressions, is subtitled “fairy-tale scene.” Myths, sagas, tales, and legends are typical features of Nordic culture. Norwegian composer Johann Halvorsen offers a collection of fairy-tale scenes. Richard Wagner's drama is also based on the old Nordic legend of the Flying Dutchman. Jean Sibelius's En Saga is an evocative experiment in which the composer sought to express the profound essence of saga and myth. Engelbert Humperdinck was also enchanted by fairy tales, and his opera The King's Children is one example.
